Safe Car Travel with Baby
Jun 27, 2023A couple weeks ago, I was in a collision with my kids in the backseat. We were lucky; no one was hurt. Our claims experience was surprisingly good. And I learned something new from our American Family contact - car seats involved in a collision should be replaced. It makes sense if you are picturing air bags & broken glass; but since our truck's damage seemed external (big dent in the back, flat tire), I'm sure I wouldn't have have thought about it. Kudos to AmFam who shared this info with me, and much gratitude for their policy to pay for the car seat replacements.
After this close call, and knowing many of us take summer car trips, here are some car seat safety resources to support your family & ease your mind.
"everyone loves to be reassured that they’re doing it right" - Jennifer Hoekstra, Secure Quest
- First time? Find a certified Car Seat technician or event who can check your car seat is installed correctly, and teach you how to use/install a car seat on your own.
- Like to listen? Kristin at Gold Coast Doulas talks with Jennifer of Secure Quest about car seat safety for babies & toddlers
- Check if your Car Seat has expired by looking at the label on the car seat (they typically have a 6-10 year lifespan). Why do they expire? Safe in the Seat explains.
- Register your Car Seat to be notified about recalls; or check the recall list.
- Car seats are typically covered by comprehensive or collision insurance policies - you can verify with your agent.
- Getting rid of a car seat? You have a couple options.
- Recycle through a service (not curbside in most places):
- Bring to your local Target during their semi-annual Car Seat Trade-In event
